5.9.1 Marking

In addition to the requirements of the applicable national legislation the following information should be permanently and legibly marked on a suitable part of the machine:

  1. Identification mark. (If the manufacturer has not provided a unique serial number then it is the responsibility of the user to add the identification mark to identify the equipment with the inspection and examination reports).

  2. Series or type designation

  3. Application(s) for which the machine is intended i.e. lifting, pulling, people carrying.

  4. SWL (or loads if machine is intended for more than one application).

  5. The diameter and quality of rope required.

  6. Direction of movement. (Some older lifting and pulling machines may be found which do not include this information, and in such cases the recommendation is to add this information)

  7. Name of manufacturer or supplier.

  8. Year of manufacture.

Wire ropes used with lifting and pulling machines are detachable and, providing the correct specification, i.e. diameter and construction, are interchangeable. The following information should therefore be permanently and legibly marked on the ferrule or terminal fitting of the wire rope:

  1. Identification mark.

  2. SWL.

  3. The length of the rope.
