7.4.2 Lorry Winch

The lorry winch is of a similar design to the plate sided winch, but usually smaller in size. It is a foot mounted winch. This type of winch is, as the name suggests, primarily used for mounting on the back of lorries for loading and unloading purposes but can be used for other lifting and pulling operations.

The design permits the wire rope to be taken off the drum horizontally, although in some applications it is possible to take the rope from the drum vertically downwards. This type of winch is usually fitted with a lever operated band brake. Generally available in a range of capacities from 500 kg to 2 tonne, these winches have a single operating handle with operation from the side of the unit. Rope drum storage capacities vary between 30 metres and 50 metres. (See Figure 7.4.2-1 )
