2.12 TRAINING
Electric bridge and gantry cranes should only be operated by suitably trained personnel.
Training in the safe use of lifting equipment is important, regardless of the type of equipment. The requirements for training are covered in section 1.10 TRAINING of this code. Carefully consider training requirements. Training should cover the basics of safe lifting, the general use of bridge and gantry cranes, and the specific use of the bridge and gantry crane in its intended operating conditions.
Training should include a practical assessment of the trainee in carrying out a number of tasks designed to test their ability to safely control the crane in all foreseeable circumstances of use. For cranes with remote control, operators must be trained in good practices, particularly in the following areas:
Ensuring that the battery has adequate charge.
Use of the neck strap to prevent accidentally dropping the control station.
Use of the key lock and lanyard if provided.
Ensuring that the main contactor is always de-energised before leaving the control station unattended.
Ensuring that the control station is always returned to the designated storage place when not in use.
In some cases it will be necessary to enlist the services of the manufacturer or supplier of the bridge and gantry crane.
