3.5.5 General

In addition to the above, consideration should also be given to the following when selecting hand operated chain hoists:

  1. The documentation required by legislation. If this is not on record refer the hoist to a Competent Person for thorough examination.

  2. Length of load chain and hand chain required.

  3. Available headroom.

  4. Degree of portability required.

  5. Operating effort available (particularly for larger capacity hoists)

Note

It is recommended that hooks and other similar devises provided for lifting should be of a type that reduces the risk of the load becoming displaced from the hook or other devices. This requirement can be met by the use of hooks with safety catches or by the use of ‘C’ hooks. (See Figure 3.5.5-1 )
