6.4.9 Lifting Speeds

Electric power operated hoists may have single, dual or multiple speeds of lifting. These are dependent on the hoist design and standard speeds vary from one manufacturer to another. It should also be remembered that multiple fall hoists will be slower in proportion to the number of falls than the basic unit from which they are constructed. With a dual speed hoist a second speed, often known as creep speed, is provided. This is considerably slower than the standard speed and assists the operative to position the load accurately.
