7.4.11 Other Design Options

As previously stated, winches are versatile machines lending themselves to easy adaptation and a wide range of design options is available, either as standard, as custom built variations, or by the rigging arrangement used. These include:

  1. Low magnetic permeability.

  2. Flame proof.

  3. Explosion proof.

  4. They may be built into other equipment to enable use for other than direct lifting, e.g. built into manually operated fork lift trucks or used to operate platform hoists.

  5. They may be arranged with diverter pulleys to change the direction of the rope run.

  6. They may be arranged with pulley blocks to give multi-falls of wire rope, thus increasing the maximum load the arrangement may lift.

  7. They may be adapted for special purpose use, e.g. as with the suspended winch or pole hoist as discussed in 7.A1 APPENDIX 1 - SUSPENDED WINCHES (POLE HOISTS) to this section of the code.
