Correctly planning and supervising a lifting operation, whether routine or complex, is core to ensuring safety. Therefore, every employer shall ensure that every lifting operation involving lifting equipment is;
properly planned by a competent person;
appropriately supervised; and
carried out in a safe manner.’
The various sections of this code detail the principles for the selection of appropriate lifting equipment, the general requirements for its safe use and make recommendations for the training of operatives. These are important considerations when planning a lifting operation, however, observance of these alone is insufficient. A safe system of work needs to be in place and appropriately supervised.
